Wrong Aim
Thursday, March 27, 2025 by Sarah Schwerin
I was outside moving lawn furniture when my son yelled my name and pointed to the house wall. “Be careful, there’s a spider.”
Sure enough. A big, hairy spider sat next to my office window.
No problem. I considered myself a bug removal expert. I reached for a nearby broom, aimed the handle at the spider, and made contact…
With the window.
My son lowered his hand, and we gaped at the shattered glass.
I had missed but hit the now shattered window.
In life, I don’t like to ask for help. Life has taught me it’s easier to make decisions and fix problems all by myself. If I ask for help, others might think I’m weak or incapable.
But when I try to do everything by myself, I end up with a big mess like the broken window. Then I try to patch up my shattered life, and it resembles the mess my son and I made when we fixed the window. Cardboard and duct tape can fix a lot of things, but not broken windows and not broken lives.
Matthew 7:7-8 tells us, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (ESV).
There is no shame in asking for help. God wants us to come to Him with our problems, small ant-sized problems and big hairy spider-sized problems. His solution is always better than duct tape.

Ugh! To say I can relate would be an understatement. I have spent most of my life trying to "do it myself," and end up running back to my Father for Him to fix what I've messed up because I didn't listen.Reply by: Sarah Schwerin

I was hoping I would eventually grow out of trying to do it myself... I'm so glad we have a good Father who's always willing to help out.Ayres Jo From Altoona At 3/28/2025 8:23:49 AM
