A Blind Date, Prince Charming, and the Rock Thrower
Thursday, February 20, 2025 by Sarah Schwerin
I walked into the grocery store. On a group blind date, no less. Fear and excitement warred inside me. The guy I’d been paired up with smiled at me and my heart did a little flip. I ran my tongue along my teeth, hoping I didn’t have any Chinese food stuck in the crevices. I was enjoying getting to know him, but I wasn’t sure he felt the same way.
My friend stopped in front of me. “What should we buy first?” She’d been the one to suggest the date, and I’d gone along with it reluctantly.
At twenty-two, I hadn’t dated many guys, and those I had weren’t Prince Charming—more like warty toads. One had thrown a rock at me but hit my friend instead, another had ignored me through the whole evening, and… Do I really need a third? I vowed to never marry. The romantic movies and songs I loved were meant for other girls, not me.
Yet, now, this guy smiled at me with a glimmer in his gorgeous green eyes, and I didn’t want to hope for more. I couldn’t be let down again.
“I think it’d be best if we split into groups, so we have plenty of time to cook. Let’s see…” he said, an index finger over his lip.
“You two get the cookie dough.” He pointed to my friend and her boyfriend. Then he flashed another smile in my direction as they scampered off.
My head seemed to spin. Was this for real? Could he actually be interested in me?
Then he pointed to the other guy and girl in our group. “And you two find the maraschino cherries. Sarah and I will get the whipped cream.”
As I followed him down an aisle, I wondered again if his interest was legitimate. We’d already eaten at my favorite restaurant, now we were buying the ingredients for my favorite dessert, and he smiled at me with that goofy grin that did something to my insides. Was I reading too much into his actions?
Yet, the shopping trip led to a fun evening making a chocolate chip cookie-themed dessert. A double date followed, which led to our first solo date, and finally a whirlwind courtship. Then, much to my mother’s amazement and delight, I was married seven months after I’d met my Prince Charming.
Twenty-three years later, we’re still together and I’m the mother of two boys who have that same goofy grin. My head still spins with wonder. How could he love me? How could he have chosen me?
My husband orchestrated that first group date to be with me. He chose activities I would enjoy so he could get to know me. It still amazes me today. Yet even more amazing is my heavenly father has orchestrated all of history in order to have a relationship with me. Since the beginning of time, God has had a plan to be in a relationship with all of us.
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you” (John 15:16, ESV).
God calls us into an exclusive relationship with him. He wants all of us. But his motives are not the same as our human motives. God always has our best interest in mind, and He knows that only in the safety of a relationship with Him will we flourish. God is the Prince Charming of every girl’s dream. He’s the hero in the romantic movie. The one the love songs are written about. God will never let you down and He’ll never throw a rock at you. He’s a gentleman who waits patiently for you to say, “Yes, I’d love to be in a relationship with you.”
