For the Birds

The birds sing to each other in the early morning sun. Yet, one industrious creature flies back and forth, making countless trips between the bushes and a tree. Every time, she picks something up, then deposits it in the tree. Back and forth. Back and forth. Trip after trip. Never stopping to rest.
A twig. A weed. A long piece of grass. A clump of Spanish Moss.
I sometimes feel like that bird. Flying back and forth while others sing about the exploits of others. Will my efforts ever amount to anything? Will others ever see how hard I work?
The bird never seems to tire. Back and forth, she flies until she has finished her nest. A safe, sturdy home, built one twig at a time.
Every word I write. Every talk I give. Every act of kindness I make. They all seem insignificant. I tire of the repetition and effort. How can my small acts ever amount to anything? No one seems to even notice.
Do you ever grow weary on your journey? You perform the same tasks over and over. You keep showing up and choosing the right things. Yet, the surrounding birds only sing about others. No one notices all your trips from the bushes to the tree. No one sees the nest you are building.
Yet, the God who made the birds sees you and your efforts. He takes our small offerings, and he uses them in his Kingdom. God’s Kingdom is like the bird’s nest. Safe, sturdy, and built one small action at a time.
Our efforts may seem small and insignificant, but those are the exact things that God loves. When you grow weary, keep flying. Keep building the nest God wants you to build.
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith,” Galatians 6:9-10, ESV.

Solid advice. I subscribe to it more today than ever. During my career "corporate" days, I longed for rest when I wasn't longing for recognition. Today, I try my best not to grow weary and no longer care about recognition from anyone, but from the Lord. I don't want Him to be done with me yet.Reply by: Sarah Schwerin
