Engraved
Monday, January 31, 2022 by By Sarah

Merriam Webster defines engrave as “to impress deeply as if with an engraver, to cut figures, letters or designs for printing.”

The definition creates an image of permanence. Initials on a tree engraved inside a heart. An inscription engraved on a ring. Words and images that have left the mind and the pen and now are released, never to be taken back.

Isaiah 49:16 tells us, “See I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…”

Engravings saturate our world. Every day I see tattoos engraved on a myriad of people. The gas station bathroom has numerous sayings engraved on the stall door that I never bother to read. There are so many images that I stop noticing them.

After I read the verse three or four times, the words sunk into my hard heart. The verse doesn’t say, “See I have engraved you on the palm of ANOTHER PERSON,” or “I have engraved you on a billboard.” It reads, “See I have engraved you on the palms of MY hands.” If I had something engraved on my hand, would I forget it? Would I forget the pain that etched it on the delicate skin of my palm?

“See I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…” What does Jesus see when he glances at his palms? A nail-scarred palm shouts my name, my face. His scars shout your name, your face. He will never forget us.
