“Don’t watch those scary movies, you’ll have nightmares.”

“I won’t.”

I rolled my preteen eyes, walked to my neighbor’s house, and watched horror movies until Mom called me home for dinner. When I left the safety of my friend’s house, I shivered. The sun had set. A sliver of the moon peeked out beneath the clouds. The once friendly trees morphed into villains waiting to catch me. What other dangers lurked in the woods? I ran home convinced the horror movie killer was chasing me.

Even though I no longer watch horror movies, dangers seem to lurk everywhere.

danger signs:

The Past–Memories haunt me and instead of dealing with them, I long to flee.
The Present–Our family has had three deaths in just a few months. I hate answering the phone.
The Future–I’m working on my first novel and everywhere I look, something or someone tells me to stop.
Myself–Anger, selfishness, and my need to control threaten to derail me.

The dangers in my life sometimes seem like horror movie images, but they are actual situations and feelings that will not leave me alone.

the answer:

Only one thing keeps me in the daily battle of dealing with my emotions and circumstances, and that is my faith in Jesus Christ. God is a mighty warrior. Nothing can stop him. He longs to fight our battles for us.

“In that day, the Lord will punish with his sword — his fierce, great and powerful sword — Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he will slay the monster of the sea.” Isaiah 27:1, NIV.

our challenge:

We can’t be sure what the Biblical Leviathan was, but we know that it was a big, scary animal. What big, scary animals stand in your way? What horror movie images haunt you? God will always be by your side, fighting for you. All you have to do is ask.
