Nighttime Driving Reminders

Staring into the grocery store parking lot, I gripped the steering wheel. Fear filled my insides, heavier than the bag of flour I’d just purchased. This would be my first time driving at night.

Pushing down my anxiety, I pulled into traffic. Sweat beaded on my forehead. Was it from nerves or the muggy weather? Why couldn’t my car have air conditioning?

As the streetlights and businesses faded, blackness seemed to envelop me. A vehicle coming in the opposite direction blinked his headlights. Strange. Was there a speed trap up ahead? I checked the speedometer. Two under the limit. I squinted into the distance, hoping I wasn’t doing something illegal.

Another car passed. It, too, flashed its lights. What was going on, and why was it so dark? Maybe my eyesight was failing. But I had my glasses on. A third, fourth, and fifth car passed, all blinking their high beams.

A sudden thought pierced my darkened mind.

I had never turned my headlights on.

Nighttime driving requires light—to show us where to go and where not to go.

Life also requires illumination. To show us where to go and not to go.

Now, I have a vehicle with air-conditioning and automatic headlights. I’m comfortable driving at night and have taught my two sons to drive as well. Yet around every corner, road hazards appear. Just when I think I’ve overcome one, another rears its ugly head.

A conflict with a loved one.

A past issue already resolved.

A new neighbor who isn’t very neighborly.

Life is a series of conflicts. Some are small speed bumps, and others are serious potholes that wreak havoc on our lives.

We have a light to help us spot hazards and work through them.

When we follow Jesus, He will show us where to go and where not to go. He will guide our actions and thoughts, helping to have a pleasant journey.

So, remember to always use headlights for nighttime driving and follow the One who illuminates the correct road.

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’” (John 8:12 ESV).

I am using your "night driving" as a devotion for our Word Weavers meeting tomorrow. Terrific analogy. We miss you, but know you're having an enriching time there.

Thanks! Miss you all too. Hopefully, I'll be back in August. See you soon!

Well done. Great analogy. I also hate driving at night, especially with all the LED headlights now.
